Unless we break a rib, we often don’t think about our rib cage. However, rib cage mobility is essential for the proper functioning of the shoulders, lower back, hips, and even our necks. It is unfortunately very common for our rib cages to get stiff and lose mobility as we age. Let’s dive a bit deeper into 4 reasons why rib cage mobility is so important AND what we can do about it!
- Breathing: Are you a chest breather? The rib cage is directly involved in breathing, and we should be utilizing our respiratory diaphragm to breathe. Learn how!
- Posture: Proper posture requires a mobile rib cage. When the rib cage is restricted, it can lead to slouching and poor alignment, which can put unnecessary strain on the neck, shoulders, and hips. However, when it comes to posture, we also need to be aware of the huge emotional component and how that influences how we carry ourselves.
- Mobility: The rib cage is also involved in the optimal moving of the arms and hips. A mobile rib cage allows for a greater range of motion in these areas, enhancing athletic performance and overall function.
- Pain management: Did you realize that we have muscles of the neck (scalenes) that attach to the first 2 ribs? This is your direct connection between upper rib cage restrictions and neck pain. Restricted rib cage mobility can contribute to chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain. Improving rib cage mobility can reduce their risk of developing chronic pain and improve overall movement.
